Most common tumour in women – #Uterine #Fibroids
Fibroids are non cancerous growths in uterus. Sometimes they don’t cause any problem and sometimes they present with heavy menstrual bleeding, dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, abdominal lump, miscarriages, infertility etc. The treatment is of two types – temporary and permanent. Temporary is with medicines and ultrasonic waves. Permanent is by surgery. The type of surgery depends on the wish of woman to bear children in future and preserve her menstrual function. If the family is completed and she is perimenopausal then surgery of choice is hysterectomy (uterus removal). If the patient wants to conceive, then the surgery involves the removal of fibroid only and the uterus is saved.
With most recent advances, surgery is done laparoscopically with single port (Cosmetic laparoscopy / scarless stitchless) and other method is Robot assisted hysterectomy. The patient walks back home same day in evening or the next day after surgery. Pain is minimal and blood loss negligible.
