Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common complaint in women leading to approximately one third of visits to doctor and a substantial loss in productivity in the workplace. The causes can be endometrial polyp, adenomyosis, fibroid uterus, cancer, hormonal disturbances, and others. The singlemost important investigation to evaluate such patients is Transvaginal ultrasound. This can rule out common structural causes and ovulatory dysfunctions.

The further treatment is based on the cause. Endometrial polyps are removed through hysteroscopy and sent for biopsy examination. Most of the polyps are non cancerous and are to be removed surgically. The Adenomyosis and Fibroids treatment depends on the age and family history of the patient. The permanent solution is surgical. Medical treatment is temporary and after the stoppage of medicines the symptoms may revert back. Cancer treatment is very different and in these cases much more investigative work up is needed to stage the case and surgery is done accordingly.
